Programme Rationale:

Despite important advances in prevention, cardiac arrest remains substantial public health problem and a leading cause of death in many parts of the world. Healthcare providers need to know how to perform CPR in a wide variety of in and out of hospital settings. This course is based on the 2010 American Heart Association’s (AHA) guidelines for CPR and ECC for Healthcare providers. The changes from the A-B-C SEQUENCE to the C-A-B SEQUENCE, and the rationale behind it, is explained in detail while providing the maximum time for each participant to gain the skills of resuscitation.

Programme Philosophy:

In the Centre for Midwifery Education we commit to an andragogical approach to learning in which proactivity, enquiry and autonomy feature predominantly (Quinn 2013). As a result we acknowledge that programme participants are adult learners with existing knowledge and a wealth of experience and therefore utilise teaching strategies that encourage reflection dialogue and debate. Value is placed on the experience, expertise and ability of programme facilitators to impart evidence based knowledge and skills.

Programme Aim:

The aim of this programme is to provide to train and up-skill health care providers in CPR and BLS
